WORD OF THE DAY
Tontine • \TAWN-teen\ • noun – 1: an annuity scheme in which subscribers share a common fund with the benefit of survivorship, the survivors' shares being increased as the subscribers die, until the whole goes to the last survivor
It was the end of the march. The final World War I veteran who had made a pact with his friends many years ago in the muddy fields of France held the dusty bottle of cognac in his wrinkled hands. It seemed ironic to him, that of all those who made the tontine pact that the bottle’s amber contents would be his alone to savor in the twilight years of his life. Ironic in that he had lived his entire existence as a teetotaler.
