For about two minutes the attentiveness of the hovering waiter was a welcome break from the snooty staff at the nearby high-toned restaurant. After that, the cloying attention rapidly descended into an obsequious display that resulted in a declining tip; in an inverse relation to the time that the waiter kept asking if there was “anything you folks need?”
