traveler didn’t get the meaning at first. However, after losing his luggage in
Nanking; losing his fortune in a Hong Kong casino; and losing his tonsils in
Canton, the parting phrase preyed on the tourist’s mind like an incubus…pushing
him close to the edge of reason.
