For about two minutes the attentiveness of the hovering
waiter was a welcome break from the snooty staff at a nearby high-toned
restaurant. Soon, the cloying attention rapidly descended into an obsequious
display. The result was a declining tip; in an inverse relation to the time
that the waiter kept asking if there was “anything you folks need?”
