WORD OF THE DAY

Luddite. • \LUD-ite\ • noun – Etymology: perhaps from Ned Ludd, 18th century Leicestershire workman who destroyed a knitting frame – one of a group of early 19th century English workmen destroying laborsaving machinery as a protest; broadly: one who is opposed to change; especially technological change.

The cell-tower opponent was depicted in the local media as a neo-Luddite by the local media. “I will protest this cell tower to my dying breath,” the wool-festooned opponent intoned. The message was diminished by the fact that he made the pronouncement using his cell phone, while talking to a satellite news service over a portable microwave transmitter site near his home, under high voltage transmission lines, located directly next to a nuclear power plant.
