WORD OF THE DAY

Sprachgefühl • \SHPRAWK-guh-few-ul\ • noun - 1: the character of a language 2: an intuitive sense of what is linguistically appropriate.

Bobby had taken extensive language immersion classes, hoping that during his European vacation that he would not stand out as a painfully obvious tourist. His instructor knew that his student would fail miserably. “You just don’t have the sprachgefühl of the German language that native speakers do,” he intoned. And, to himself, “you’ll have to ditch the camera, clothes that absolutely scream ‘I am a tourist,’ and the penchant to only order burger and fries for every meal.”
