the links in today’s news digest lead to current stories. Please note that some
media organizations update their web sites regularly, which may result in
broken links in the future.
Note
that as some newspapers migrate to a “paywall” system of access, some articles
may not be available without forking over some cold hard credit card cash.
However, some sites will allow a certain number of story accesses per month
before holding out their hand. Sorry if this is an inconvenience.

WORD OF THE DAY
Whelm
• \WELM\ • Verb - 1: to cover or engulf completely with usually disastrous
effect 2: to overcome in thought or feeling: overwhelm 3: to pass or go over
something so as to bury or submerge it.
Ok,
so we use the word overwhelm when something is swept over by an opposing force
(The Urak Hai and Nazgul overwhelmed Osgiliath during the “War of the Ring.”)
If one uses the term overwhelm instead of whelm, isn’t that like saying “very
pregnant”, or highly illegal? Either way, whelm just doesn’t sound as
impressive.
