WORD OF THE DAY
De
Rigueur • \duh ree-GURR\ • Adjective - Prescribed or required by fashion,
etiquette, or custom: proper.
During
my years at the Evergreen State College, periodic potlucks were a wonderful way
to sample various vegan/sustainable dietary offerings (including home-made
beer, yum). A socially-conscious menu was considered de rigueur, but it was hard
to achieve for those like me who lived a fair distance from the school.
Therefore, Kentucky Fried Chicken was my standard offering. At every potluck I
was berated for bringing “Corporate Meat” to the gathering.
However,
I never went home with leftovers.

LINKS & PAYWALL ADVISORY
All
the links in today’s news digest lead to current stories. Please note that some
media organizations update their web sites regularly, which may result in
broken links in the future.
Note
that as some newspapers migrate to a “paywall” system of access, some articles
may not be available without forking over some cold hard credit card cash. However,
some sites will allow a certain number of story accesses per month before
holding out their hand. Sorry if this is an inconvenience.
