Woonerf • \voo-NERF\ • Noun – A woonerf is a living street implemented in the Netherlands and in Flanders. Techniques include shared space, traffic calming, and low speed limits. The word literally translates as “living yard”.
“Woonerf,” enthused the fresh-faced urban planning student. “Green streets, rain gardens, earthy, rampant greenery in roundabouts. It makes my street an entity more than just pavement. And I will love him, and hug him, and pet him, and call him ‘George.’”
