WORD OF THE DAY

Indubitable • \in-DOO-buh-tuh-bul\ • adjective - Too evident to be doubted: unquestionable

“Watch this, whispered the office worker on the fourth floor to his visiting client.” The company CEO was headed to lunch, loudly announcing to all who would hear that he always ate a vegetarian sub sandwich to retain his “girlish figure”. What he did not realize, is that his indubitable habit of visiting the “Taco Trailer” across the street from his headquarters was observed daily by all his employees. The lard-enhanced refried beans did little to restrain the proliferation of fat cells around his mid-section.

WORD OF THE DAY

Espiègle • \es-PYEGL\ • adjective - Frolicsome, roguish

“Just what I needed this morning,” sighed the portly bank examiner. “A teller with a sense of humor!” The teller’s espiegle attitude to the annual audit of procedures would soon end in tragedy, as the origami gallery of $100 bills across her workspace was revealed to have been, in reality, funds skimmed from the “Bedford Falls Savings and Loan” account.

ENERGY & UTILITY ISSUES

SEN. MURRAY ADDS BPA BORROWING CAPACITY TO STIMULUS BILL - U.S. Senator Patty Murray, D-Wash., a member of the Senate Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee, said today that she has included $3.25 billion in additional borrowing authority for the Bonneville Power Administration in the Senate American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The increased borrowing authority will assist BPA in funding critical infrastructure projects to allow new renewable resources to come online, including 4,700 megawatts of wind energy and to directly create an estimated 20,000 green jobs, including construction jobs. WORD OF THE DAY

Prescient •\PRESH-ee-unt\ • noun - Foreknowledge of events: a: divine omniscience b: human anticipation of the course of events: foresight

“I told you that was going to happen,” Ambrose barked at his unfortunate wife. A tray of deep-fried chicken gizzards had cascaded on her head upon opening the refrigerator to retrieve a soft drink. His seemingly prescient statement was deemed less than mysterious when it was revealed that for the lack of space, the tray had been precariously balanced on the top of condiment and styrofoam containers. So instead of being prescient, it was merely inevitable.

WORD OF THE DAY

Remora • \rih-MOR-uh\ • noun - 1: any of various marine fishes that have a suction disk on the head by means of which they cling especially to other fishes 2: hindrance, drag

Rudolph Valentino had many drags on his career as he rose to superstardom at the dawn of cinema. One of the least talked about is the presence of his “assistant” Fredo, who followed him, remora-like in hopes that the shine of Rudolph’s romantic reputation would rub off…benefiting him. It did not work, but the nagging presence continued for years, due to a mysterious favor from “Greasy Thumb” Cioppino that the actor could not refuse.

Barbican • \BAR-bih-kun\ • noun - An outer defensive work; especially: a tower at a gate or bridge

It wasn’t until the accounting acolytes arrived at the final, burnished, dark wood doors that they realized that the path represented an imposing, complex barbican designed to deter even the stoutest of heart.
