WORD OF THE DAY

Shibboleth • \SHIH-beh-luth\ • noun - 1a: a word or saying used by adherents of a party, sect, or belief and usually regarded by others as empty of real meaning b: a widely held belief c: truism, platitude 2a: a use of language regarded as distinctive of a particular group b: a custom or usage regarded as distinguishing one group from others

Brandy’s political filter was working overtime at the rally for the latest party hack to announce their run for office. She gave an involuntary flinch at each of the candidate’s barbed shibboleths about government waste, throwing the bums out, being a voice of the people..blah, blah, blah. “I’d just go for some basic competence,” she sighed on her way out of the bunting-festooned hall.
