Trying to impress is country brethren about the vast population of his big city, the speaker droned on about his family’s telephone book, a weighty tome his parents used as a booster seat. Unfortunately, the story lost a great deal in its translation, as residents of the sleepy little plains town had not seen a phone book any bigger than a temperance tract. “Don’t see how you can reach the table with something that thin,” drawled the local telephone operator to her seat-mate.
