WORD OF THE DAY
Fruition • \froo-ISH-un\ • noun – 1: pleasurable use or possession: enjoyment 2a: the state of bearing fruit *b: realization
Time was running out. All his years of practicing three point shots would hinge on his left corner shot…the fruition of his efforts was not to be, however, as a power outage reset Antonio’s NBA video game with two seconds left on the game clock. “Curses,” he fumed under his breath as he was forced to return to work in his cubicle on his first quarter reports.
From Merriam-Webster Dictionary – "Fruition" must come from the word "fruit," right? Not exactly. "Fruition" and "fruit" are related (both ultimately come from the Latin verb "frui," meaning "to enjoy"), but they were derived independently. The original meaning of "fruition" had nothing to do with fruit. Rather, when the term was first used in the early 15th century, it meant only "pleasurable use or possession." Not until the 19th century did "fruition" develop a second meaning, "the state of bearing fruit," possibly as the result of a mistaken assumption that "fruition" evolved from "fruit." The "state of bearing fruit" sense was followed quickly by the figurative application to anything that can be "realized" and metaphorically bear fruit, such as a plan or a project.

WORD OF THE DAY
Errant • \AIR-unt\ • adjective – 1: traveling or given to traveling 2*a: straying outside the proper path or bounds b: moving about aimlessly or irregularly c: behaving wrongly
Baby chicks spilled out of the shipping cartons at the post office, scattering hither and yon in their errant travels through the racks of “business direct” publications and tubs of regular mail. Days after the incident, postal clerks would stop still whenever a small chirp was heard to track down the missing chick. Finally, one employee decided to put a food dish out, which was appropriately dubbed the USPS “chick magnet”.

ENERGY & UTILITY ISSUES
MASON COUNTY PUD 3 MOVING FORWARD WITH RATE INCREASE – Mason County PUD No. 3 is moving forward with an electricity rate increase of an average of five percent. Tuesday, the PUD 3 Board of Commissioners directed staff to draft a resolution for the rate increase to take effect on May 1st. The resolution will also allow for an increase of up to five percent next year. Any rate increase in 2009 would depend on whole sale energy costs and other financial conditions. In addition, the Commission is considering a change in late fees. Past due billings would be assessed a late fee after 28 days, amounting to $7.50 for residential and lighting accounts, and $7.50 or 1% of the past due balance (whichever is greater) for commercial and industrial accounts. The rate increase this year was part of the Utility's budget adopted in December. The Mason County PUD No. 3 Board of Commissioner is expected to adopt the resolution during its next meeting, 10am March 18th. A typical residential customer, using about 1,000 kilowatt hours per month, will pay about $3.60 more a month. The last Mason County PUD No. 3 rate increase was three percent in 2006. And again, this year's five percent electricity rate increase will take effect on May 1st.
Businesses could see rate cuts up to 12.7% – Franklin PUD announced a rate decrease Wednesday that will provide the biggest savings for some business accounts. (Tri-City Herald)

WORD OF THE DAY
Hibernaculum • \hy-ber-NAK-yuh-lum\ • noun – : a shelter occupied during the winter by a dormant animal (as an insect or reptile)
With the arrival of spring, Alfredo grunted and heaved himself out of his overstuffed recliner. His basement sanctuary was dark, warm and well stocked with cheap beer, pork rinds and other tasty goodies designed to help him hunker down for the winter. His wife actually enjoyed the annual three month reprieve from her husband’s monosyllabic grunts and inopportune moments of bodily functions while her friends visited. The formal sealing of the door to Alfredo’s self-styled hibernaculum every winter was celebrated with a neighborhood party, which only ended when the latch clicked shut on the basement door.
