WORD OF THE DAY

Suss • \SUSS\ • Verb - To find or discover (something) by thinking; to inspect or investigate (something) in order to gain more knowledge.

Francois was deep in thought, his chin resting on his hardened, sculptor’s fist. He had made a bet with himself that he could create a piece of art that would last the ages; be used to represent man’s quest to suss the answer to life, the universe and everything; doing it all while stark naked. For days, the only answer he could come up with was 42. He didn’t know why, but every so often the answer, like a brief glimpse of Truth, would flicker into his peripheral vision…only to be lost again to the sands of time.

WORD OF THE DAY

Simpatico • \simp-PAH-tick-coe\ • Adjective - 1: agreeable, likeable 2: being on the same wavelength: congenial, sympathetic

“Peas” … “In a Pod.” “Up” …”The Lazy River.” “Dog” …”Gone.” The husband & wife team were like a series of rimshots as they finished each other’s’ sentences. Their simpatico ended there, however, as their daily domestic life was one long series of miscommunications about the household budget, what to watch on T-V…and even worse, what to name the children. One of the offspring was named three (for the third child) for nearly ten years.

WORD OF THE DAY

Orotund • \ORE-uh-tund\ • Adjective - 1: marked by fullness, strength, & clarity of sound: sonorous 2: pompous, bombastic.

The rollers of crashing music washed over Frederick’s dinner guests in orotund waves, its throbbing resonance causing wine glasses to hum to the vibrations of the Wagnerian opera his stereo system was blasting into the enclosed dining space of his small apartment. Conversation was impossible, as was hearing after exposure to the eardrum-bursting concert.
